Storm of the Century:

The Science of Thunderstorms

Grades 4-6 · 45-60 minutes

When seven inches of rain sends Turkey Creek over its banks, students get to dig into the science behind the storm. Using NOAA’s thunderstorm lessons and a hands-on cotton ball cloud lab, they explore how storms grow, why clouds eventually let go of their rain, and calculate how many tons of water fell on Scrub Oak. Includes discussion prompts tied to Chapter 9, plus vocabulary worksheets leveled for grades 4, 5, and 6 with answer keys.

Painting the Sky:

How Artists Create Space

Grades 4-6 · 45-60 minutes

The wide-open pastures around her grandparents’ house make Grace feel small and a little lost, and artists use specific tools to create that same feeling on a flat page. Students draw their own towering cumulus cloud, then compare how Georgia O’Keeffe and Thomas Cole used perspective, placement, and shading to paint very different skies. Includes a Chapter 13 read-aloud connection, an art vocabulary worksheet, and a teacher answer key.
